Difference between a Teaser and a Theatrical Trailer

A teaser trailer is pretty much what is says on the tin, it is a teaser of an upcoming film that hasn't got a full trailer developed yet. It is more common in large expensive films, most likely coming out in a few months’ time rather than soon to be released. Teaser trailers try not to give a lot of the film's story line away but they simply just show either funny or action packed moments of the film. The teasers are mainly just to make audiences aware of this huge film coming soon to their screen. The main point is so that when they see the real trailer they are already aware of the film, T.V program or video game... This would make audiences more familiar with the film already and therefore more likely to go out and watch it. Teaser trailers are usually around 30-90 seconds long and may not even contain much real footage from the film, such as the Paranormal Activity 3 trailer was more a scare tactic as opposed to real footage taken from the film, this is for affect and used to shock audiences. Teaser trailers are quite different from Theatrical trailers because they don't have a specific time when they come out or they don't really have to be relevant to the film, like the Despicable me 2 trailer, it carries no relevance and the films comes out in 2013. These trailers are usually purely for advertising and making audiences aware of the up and coming film. As a generation we are frequently using the internet so it is very easy to contact friends and communities so when a new program or film is introduced the internet is where it is first sold to audiences.

The main reason these are made is to excite audiences and create hype, if this is created then it is then easier for distributors to sell the media. When audiences are targeted through these forms of trailers then it is common that the creator knows what the audience wants and how they want it. Teaser trailers will only be created for major films because the creator knows that by creating the film it will make audiences happy and they will anticipate the end product. This is purely to gain money and make a profit.
